The Presence of God

Genesis 28:10-12, 16.
New International Version
Jacob’s Dream at Bethel
10 Jacob left Beersheba and set out for Harran. 11 When he reached a certain place, he stopped for the night because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones there, he put it under his head and lay down to sleep. 12 He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.
16 When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.

Did you know that God is present everywhere but his presence cannot be accessed everywhere?

After Jacob’s encounter with the Lord, we discover two truths about the presence of The Lord. First, by The Lord is in this place, he acknowledges the truth that the presence of God can be active in that particular geographical location. In other words, he didn’t feel the presence everywhere throughout the journey. Second, when he said I was not aware of it, he alluded to the truth that the presence of God can be missed even though it may be active in a place.

So, just because you don’t see any sign of God around you, does not mean that God is not with you.

Jacob was young. He was inexperienced. He thought there was something about the stone, or the forest, or the atmosphere that made God reveal himself to him. He was wrong. God had always been with him. He was the one who told his mother about his future while he was yet to be born.

So then It may be that God will be present in your situation but you may not know it. He may be present in your family and you will not know it.

Do you want to be aware of the presence of God?

Lord, help me know you are near.
